MOUNTAIN VALLEY

Hired to design a solution for more space for a family of three, we were faced with the initial problem of deciding what to do with an existing house which just needed an upgrade. The site provided us with the opportunity to build on an existing foundation which at the time supported a small workshop with a residential occupancy. So, we designed a second home and convinced the clients to lease the existing house, after renovations, to generate income and add value to their property. We designed around the idea of a spirial with the intension of using the central "eye" as a device for bringing light to the center of the house. This was important because as the house would sit on an extreme incline in the hills of Mill Valley, the entire north elevations would face a mountain.

The site provided us with the opportunity to build on an existing foundation which at the time supported a small workshop and sleeping loft. So, we designed a second home and convinced the clients to lease the existing house, after renovations, to generate income and add value to their property. We designed around the idea of a spirial with the intension of using the central "eye" as a device for bringing light to the center of the house. This was important because as the house would sit on an extreme incline in the hills of Mill Valley, the entire north elevations would face a steep forested mountain providing very little natural light.
